Surveying Licensing & Rules in Western Australia
Important regulations and resources to help you hire with confidence in Western Australia.
Licence and practising certificate
Any person practising land surveying under the title Licensed Surveyor must be registered with the Land Surveyors Licensing Board and hold a current practising certificate.
Reciprocal registration
Surveyors licensed in other Australian jurisdictions or New Zealand can apply for registration in WA by providing a letter of accreditation, proof of registration, academic qualifications, identification and a certificate of currency for professional indemnity insurance, and paying the requisite fees.
First-time applicant requirements
New applicants must be at least 18 years old, hold a four-year Bachelor of Surveying degree equivalent to Curtin University, complete a two-year professional training agreement with a licensed surveyor and complete five projects plus practical and written assessments.
Automatic mutual recognition
Under the AMR scheme, surveyors from participating states may be deemed registered in WA. They must notify the Board, provide evidence of current registration and professional indemnity insurance and obtain a practising certificate. They must comply with WA laws.
Annual practising certificate renewal
Practising certificates are valid for one year. Applications to renew must be submitted between 1 and 30 November with evidence of CPD compliance (15 points), professional indemnity insurance details and payment.
Continuing professional development
Section 11A of the Licensed Surveyors Act 1909 requires licensed surveyors to undertake continuing education in cadastral surveying; the Board emphasises that CPD is essential to maintain high standards.
Insurance requirement
Applicants for registration, mutual recognition and practising certificate renewal must provide a certificate of currency for professional indemnity insurance.
