Surveying Licensing & Rules in Victoria
Important regulations and resources to help you hire with confidence in Victoria.
Licensed surveyor registration
Only registered Licensed Surveyors may perform cadastral surveying in Victoria. Registration is granted under the Surveying Act 2004.
Educational qualifications
Applicants must successfully complete an approved university degree in surveying or geomatics or an equivalent qualification as approved by the Board.
Practical training and examinations
After graduation, candidates must obtain practical training in cadastral surveying under the supervision of a Licensed Surveyor and pass the Board's examinations.
Professional training agreement
Graduate surveyors must enter a Professional Training Agreement; the PTA requires 360 days of supervised training, including 240 days of cadastral and 120 days of non-cadastral work.
Further professional education
Licensed surveyors must complete at least 15 Further Professional Education points each 12-month period, with at least 10 points in cadastral practice or development planning. They must certify compliance and maintain records.
Annual registration renewal
Registration must be renewed each year before 31 December. Renewal fees apply, late payments incur an additional fee and failure to pay within three months results in removal from the register.
Disciplinary enforcement
The Board investigates and prosecutes offences under the Surveying Act 2004. Unlicensed persons cannot undertake cadastral surveys and the Board takes action against unauthorised surveys.
