Roof drainage endorsement for builders
Since 4 July 2018, licensed builders can apply for a roof drainage endorsement. The endorsement allows them to install roof gutters, valleys, ridges and flashing associated with building work but only when the work is linked to a building contract; the builder must be competent and cannot advertise as a roof plumber.
Work not covered by endorsement
The endorsement does not allow servicing, repairs or removal of roof drainage when not associated with building work. It excludes installing downpipes, underground drainage or plumbing design; only licensed plumbers can perform these tasks.
Builder and plumbing licences
General building work may require a Building Services Provider licence. Roof plumbing and drainage that is not covered by an endorsement must be undertaken by a licensed plumber under Tasmania’s Occupational Licensing Act 2005 (general reference).
No compulsory home warranty insurance
Tasmania does not currently require builders warranty insurance by law. Homeowners have less protection compared with other states; optional schemes may be available but they are not compulsory.
Safe roof work requirements
Roofing is high-risk work. Builders must prepare a Safe Work Method Statement, provide fall-prevention systems and comply with the National Construction Code and plumbing standards for roof drainage.
