Important regulations and resources to help you hire with confidence in Victoria.
Registration and licence classes
You must be registered with the Victorian Building Authority as a building surveyor, unlimited or limited, and meet qualification, experience and competency requirements. Only one building surveyor may be appointed per project.
Professional indemnity insurance
Maintain professional indemnity insurance that meets Victorian Building Authority requirements, provide evidence on registration and renewal and ensure coverage is continuous until the anniversary of your registration.
Code of conduct compliance
Follow the Code of Conduct for Building Surveyors: act according to law and public interest, act with integrity, perform competently, act independently, avoid conflicts, keep accurate records, communicate effectively and manage complaints.
Independence and conflicts
You must not prepare the building design or have a pecuniary interest in the design or building work. Under Building Act section 79, private surveyors cannot act where there is a conflict of interest.
Permits and inspections
Assess applications and issue building permits, occupancy permits and compliance certificates, conduct mandatory inspections and ensure work complies with the Building Act 1993, Building Regulations 2018 and National Construction Code.
Appointment and consumer rights
Only the property owner or their agent can appoint a private building surveyor; the builder cannot. Provide building permit information and guidance to owners and comply with consumer protection laws.
